The Basket Making Creative Bootcamp is a hands-on creative arts program that introduces learners to the art and skill of transforming natural and suitable craft materials into beautiful, functional and marketable baskets. Through practical activities, learners explore basic weaving, coiling, plaiting, joining, shaping, decorating and finishing techniques.

The Bootcamp provides an engaging environment where learners can develop creativity while gaining practical knowledge about materials, patterns, shapes and construction. Depending on their age and skill level, participants progress from simple weaving exercises to designing and producing complete baskets and other woven products.

Learners are also introduced to the cultural and creative significance of basket making, including the role of traditional weaving in Kenyan communities. The program encourages respect for traditional craftsmanship while challenging learners to experiment with contemporary designs and products.

Objectives 

By the end of the Bootcamp, learners will be able to:

1. Learn basic basket-making and weaving techniques such as weaving, coiling, plaiting, joining, shaping and finishing.
2. Identify and prepare suitable craft materials while practicing sustainable and responsible material use.
3. Develop creativity and design skills through patterns, colours, shapes and original woven designs.
4. Improve fine-motor skills, patience, concentration, precision and craftsmanship.
5. Create functional and decorative woven products such as baskets, storage items, plant holders, gift baskets and décor.
6. Develop innovation and problem-solving skills by designing and improving woven products.
7. Appreciate Kenyan basketry traditions and cultural heritage while exploring contemporary designs.
8. Learn basic entrepreneurship, including costing, pricing, branding, packaging and marketing.
9. Build a creative portfolio showcasing weaving samples and completed products.
10. Explore basket making as a creative career and income-generating opportunity.
